As one of the first fifteen institutes established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) was founded in May 1950, following the merger of the Institute of Chemistry of the former Central Academy of Sciences with the Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Materia Medica of the former Peking Academy of Science. It was formerly named the Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, and renamed Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry in 1970. The mission of SIOC is to conduct cutting-edge research in science and technology of organic chemistry and related interdisciplines, and to publicly disseminate the results of its scientific research and technological developments.
The institute has become internationally recognized for its comprehensive research into various areas of organic chemistry, ranging from basic research, high-tech development to technology industrialization of organic chemistry. In the past 60 years, SIOC scientists have made tremendous contributions to the development of nation’s science, economy and defense. Many significant advances achieved at SIOC in the areas of bioorganic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and organofluorine chemistry has established its prominent position in the basic research of organic chemistry and profoundly facilitated the development of the applied research and related industry in China.
By taking the new opportunity of “Innovation 2020” in light of development roadmap of CAS, SIOC is making great efforts to involve itself in three major scientific themes including chemical transformation, chemical biology, and organic materials by focusing the challenging issues related to “population, health & agriculture”, “resource, energy & environment”, and “national security”, to provide innovative knowledge and technological support for the emerging industries of strategic importance in China. SIOC will continuously promote the CAS culture of “realistic approach, truth-seeking attitude, collaborative work and creative spirit” by adhering demand orientation, adopting research excellence, emphasizing on originality and peculiarity, and encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation to provide an unparalleled scientific environment for pursuing high-level basic and applied researches of organic chemistry and related areas. SIOC is striving forward in full swing to make itself into an important research center of organic chemistry and the cradle of organic chemists in China as well as one of the key bases of organic chemistry in the world.
