The Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC) was founded in May 1950 as one of the first 15 institutes established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The mission of SIOC is to conduct cutting-edge research in the science and technology of organic chemistry and related disciplines and publicly disseminate its research results and technological developments.

Over the last 70 years, SIOC scientists have made tremendous contributions to the development of the nation’s science, economy and defense. The institute’s achievements include collaboration on the total synthesis of crystalline bovine insulin; collaboration on the total synthesis of yeast Ala-tRNA; and development of fluorine-containing plastics and key materials for the nation’s security. It has also conducted extensive basic research on physical organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and complex natural product synthesis and related methodologies.

Since its establishment, SIOC has won 363 research awards, including 75 national-level awards. It has above 1200 patents and has published around 12,800 academic papers.

SIOC’s research facilities include the National Key Laboratory of Bioorganic and Natural Product Chemistry; the National Key Laboratory of Organometallic Chemistry; the CAS Key Laboratory of Organofluorine Chemistry; the CAS Key Laboratory of the Synthetic Organic Chemistry of Natural Products; the CAS Key Laboratory of Synthetic and self-assembly chemistry for organic functional molecules; the CAS Key Laboratory of Energy control materials. SIOC is also home to the CAS Interdisciplinary Research Center of Biology and Chemistry and Shanghai-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory of Chemical Synthesis.

The institute has a staff of over 770, including 10 CAS academicians and 286 research fellows and engineers at the professor or associate professor level. In addition, the institute has 762 graduate students and 110 postdoctoral fellows.
