The experts team was organized by the Bureau of Comprehensive Planning of Chinese Academy of Sciences to take the site assessment from May 24th to 26th on the key laboratory of organic fluorine and laboratory of organic synthesis for natural products (lab for modern organic synthesis of chemistry), according to Assessment of Key Laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Trial).

The group, headed by Mr. Qunji Xue from Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, was formed by nine senior experts coming from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, six institutes and one university affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences. After listening to the reports from the director of the two laboratory and five representative academic reports, the experts inquired about the operation situation of the labs in details, and did the on-spot investigation. The colloquium was done separately with the responsible persons from support unit and the backbone of the labs. The final appraisal and suggestions were made by the experts’ team after an all-around discussion.

Experts all maintained that the orientation, academic direction and scientific goal of the key laboratory of organic fluorine were quite clear which had been combined tightly with the subject development, with the national economy and with the material development of key fluoride materials for national safety. In the recent 5years, the basic research achievements of the lab had enriched and developed organic fluorine chemistry, with the world-influence work in the research in new chemical reactions of organic fluorine and fluorine-containing synthon and their applications. At the same time, the initial development of new fluorine materials like special oil effected national security were done with actual application, according to the national requirement, which represented the outstanding scientific innovation ability and overall competitiveness of the lab.

The clear orientation of the laboratory of organic synthesis for natural products met the needs of the subject development and the long-term demands of the national economic demand and the society development. For many years, the basic research works of total synthesis of complex natural products, asymmetric synthesis methodology and new types of reaction were appraised by the international counterparts and had enjoyed influence in the world. Moreover, the vital progresses were achieved on chiral drugs and sound usage of steroidal sapogenin. All these showed the strong ability of the lab in scientific and its overall competitiveness.

Suggestions and ideas were proposed by the experts about the further development of the two labs. They hoped the key laboratory of organic fluorine to become a world-famous organic fluorine research center by more research on environmental friendly fluorine chemistry and fluorine materials by the opening of the lab, by the cooperative communications with the elites and by enhancing goals. They also expected the laboratory of organic synthesis for natural products to become national research center in this area through the coming of the young talented people, through the opening of the lab and through the further cooperation with companies.

The key laboratory of organic fluorine and laboratory of organic synthesis for natural products of Chinese Academy of Sciences did serious preparations for the assessment by the in-site pre-assessment organized by the entire research and management department, and they got active supports from leaders, departments like management, administration and logistics.
