Successful Development of New and High Efficiency Coal Additive

According to the report of “Science Times” on February 4 (Journalist Huang Xin), the new and high efficiency coal additive CHARNA C and CHARNA C02, which are developed by science and technology team headed by Dr. Jiang Biao, who is also the director of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS together with Beijing CHARNA Chemicals Ltd, has achieved success and passed the expert inspection recently.

It’s reported that boiler combustion performance test has been carried out in more than ten units such as Panyu Titrnium Industry Co., Ltd of Pangang Group and Beijing Research Institute of Coal Chemistry for nearly 20 tons of such coal additive products and the results showed that: coal saving rate is between 7% and 12%, sulfur dioxide emission reduction is between 24% and 33%, nitrogen oxide emission reduction is about 17%. Due to its good energy saving and emission reduction effect, many large-scale thermoelectric enterprises have showed great interest in this additive, which have been used in parts of enterprises. The research results of such program has gained great attention from the State Council and Ministry of Environmental Protection and CHARNA C has been recommended as “China Key New Technology and New Products of Energy Saving and Emission Reduction” and listed as “National Key Program of Energy-saving Technology” by National Development and Reform Committee.

It is predicted that the energy demand of China will still keep sustained growth at a faster speed over the next 20 years, in which, the domestic coal demand in 2005 was 1.4 billion ton and will reach 1.55 billion ton in 2010 and 2 billion ton in 2020. In quite a long time of the future, coal is still the main energy of China. According to statistics, in the total amount of carbon matrix fuel consumed in China, the carbon matrix fuel which is used for direct combustion such as thermal power generation, industrial boilers, industrial furnaces and household stoves, etc, directly is higher than 85%. According to statistics, the sulfur dioxide and smoke gas emitted by coal combustion in 2005 were about 90% and 70% of the national total emissions respectively, the emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxides were about 80% and 65% of the national total emissions respectively.

It’s understood that many research institutes at home and abroad has carried out the research of coal combustion additive and obtained certain progress and parts of products have been put into market for sale, but not widely used due to a lot of problems in the aspect of actual use effect, safety, stability, economy and production maneuverability during use. So far, there is no product of large-scale application.

According to the introduction of Jiang Biao, this new and high efficiency coal additive is different with the additives sold on the market in the following aspects: 1. Their mechanism of action is different, the new coal additive is a free radical high efficiency catalyst developed according to the burning nature of coal and by combining the actual combustion process; 2. Significant economy, the catalysis combustion-supporting effect of the new coal additive is remarkable and the economic benefit is considerable, seen from the perspective of comprehensive economic benefits; 3. the new coal additive combines three functions: catalysis combustion-supporting, reduce pollutant emission and clean equipment, which other products on the market don’t have fundamentally; 4. the new coal additive is liquid, which is convenient for mix, with low cost and lower proportion added than that of other additives, so it consumes less dosage; 5. The worse the quality of coal is, the more significant the effect of the used new coal additive is and the better the economic benefit is. While the new coal additive combines the double function of fuel saving and environmental protection, its use method is simple and it doesn’t need other equipment, it can not only be added by the jet flow device of the available equipment, but also be added by sprinkling during the process of transferring fuel by conveyor belts, and it can be widely applied to various coal burning boilers such as coal dust furnace, chain furnace and circulating fluid bed.

Jiang Biao emphasized that with the attention of our government to environmental protection, the clients having domestic existing coal-burning boilers are all the potential clients of coal burning catalyst, the market is huge and it has great prospect of industrialization.
