10th International Symposium for Chinese Organic Chemists and 7th International Symposium for Chinese Inorganic Chemists took place in Shanghai from July 27th to July 31st,2008. The Symposium, cohosted by Shanghai Institution of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and by the Department of Chemistry, Fudan University, attracted over 400 representatives from 11countries and regions.
The opening ceremony of the symposium was hosted by Mr. Shuli You, Secretary of the organizational committee and researcher of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. As the co-chairs of the symposium, Mr. Biao Jiang, Researcher of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Dongyuan Zhao, academician of the Department of Chemistry Fudan University, gave the welcome speeches. Mr. Yongjun Chen, associate supervisor of the Division of Chemistry of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Mr. Canping Du, director of the Division of Chemistry of the National Natural Science Foundation of China , and Mr. Rong Chen also attended the symposium.
The symposium, with multiple research directions in organic and inorganic chemistry, emphasized the current development situation and the future trend in this interdisciplinary. It displayed the scientific achievements and academic trends in the fields of organic and inorganic chemistry with different exchange styles like symposium report, invitation report, oral report, post comment and exhibitions. During the symposium, 14reports, 48invited reports, 58 oral reports and 130 wall-paper reports were arranged. Many well-known chemists were invited to address in the symposium like Gregory C. Andy Hor from National University of Singapore, Guocheng Jia from Hongkong University of Science and Technology, Zuowei Xie from the Chinese University of Hongkong, Yutai Tao from Chemistry Department of Academia Sinica in Taiwan, Yun Ji from National Taiwan University, Jinpei Cheng from Nankai University, Maochun Fu from Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yi Tang from Fudan University, and Kuiling Ding from our institute. Furthermore, several awards were established including Bau Family Award, Mr. and Mr. Sun Chan Award and Poster Award. This time Christophr J. Chang from University of Califonia was awarded Bau Family Award, while Li Deng from Brandeis University was awarded Mr. and Mrs. Sun Chan Award.
International Symposium for Chinese Organic Chemists and International Symposium for Chinese Inorganic Chemists, the international seminar series, hold once two years, is to provide more opportunities for all Chinese organic and inorganic chemist in the world (including China mainland, Taiwan, Hongkong, and overseas counties) to communicate and exchange new ideas, achievements and to discuss the development plan of chemistry, and to seek more possibilities for long-term and practical international cooperations. After the 1st International Symposium for Chinese Organic Chemist in Shanghai , the rest eight were hold separately in Beijing, Taibei, Hongkong, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hsinchu in Taiwan, Hongkong and Singapore. By the influence of the successful International Symposium for Chinese Organic Chemists, the The 1st Internation Symposium for Chinese Inorganic Chemists was hold in Hongkong in 1996, with the rest two in Nanjing and Taipei. Since the 4th Symposium, these two international Symposium took place simultaneously in the same place.
Mr. Ran Hong, Secretary of the organizational committee and researcher of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science, hold the closing ceremony of the symposium on the afternoon of July 30th. Mr. Zhiming Zhi, academician of Hongkong University hold the awarding ceremony for the wallpaper reward this time. Mr. Xuming Peng, academician of Taiwan University, on behalf of Taiwan University and Chemistry Department of Academia Sinica in Taiwan, the host for the next symposium, showed a view of the beautiful and attractive sceneries in Taiwan and the brief situation about the hosts.
