The 3rd International Conference on Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, during October 19 ~23, 2008, which was co-sponsored by Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS and Department of Chemistry of Zhejiang University and attended by more than 150 delegates coming from China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

Research Yao Zhujun, the secretary general of Conference Organizing Committee, presided over the welcome banquet on the evening of October 19; Lin Guoqiang, the chairman of Conference Organizing Committee and an academician at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, made welcome speechs on behalf of the Organizing Committee firstly, welcoming the attending of scientists, specially thanking Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS for their great support and financial aid to this Conference and believing that the conference will be held successfully and effectively under the support of the delegates who participate in the conference. Researcher Ding Kuiling, the deputy party secretary and deputy director of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, and Professor Wang Yanguang, the deputy dean of College of Science of Zhejiang University congratulated on the smooth holding of the Conference on behalf of sponsors respectively, believing that this conference will still continue its orientation at the beginning of its establishment, inherit the accumulated positive results and provide more extensive and profound communication and cooperation platform for Asian organic chemists, under the joint efforts of organizers and delegates.

This conference focused on the core research direction of organic chemistry such as organic synthesis, methodology and total synthesis to carry out communication and discussion. The conference also covered many subject directions in nanochemistry, green chemistry, chemicobiology, pharmaceutical chemistry, structure and material science, environmental chemistry, etc, in the frontier of organic chemistry and interdisciplinary fields, and showed the up to date scientific research results and academic trends and gave prominence to the up to date development and future tendency of frontier fields of organic chemistry by way of plenary lectures, invited lectures and wallnewspaper comments. The conference included 2 lectures, 32 invited lectures and 88 wallnewspapers. Thailand Princess Chulaphorn and Professor Minoru Isobe at the Japan Nagoya University gave plenary lectures. Researcher Ma Dawei and Hu Jinbo at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry gave invited lectures, Researcher Li Zhanting, Wu Yikang, Yao Zhujun and Zhai Hongbin attended wallnewspaper exhibition.

The International Conference on Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia is a part of Asian CORE Program (Hereinafter referred to ACP). ACP is launched by JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) and the important academic institutions in Japan, China (Including Taiwan and Hong Kong), South Korea and Thailand participated in the operation of such program for the purpose of promoting the fast development of Asian organic chemistry and strengthening the communication and cooperation among scientists. The academic institutions participating in ACP include Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, Fudan University, Nankai University, Peking University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, etc in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan University and Academia Sinica, etc in Taiwan.

Since the 0th International Conference on Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia was successfully held in Japan Nagoya University in March, 2006, the 1st and 2nd conferences were held in Okinawa of Japan in October 10, 2006 and Pusan of South Korea in September, 2007 respectively. The International Conference on Cutting-Edge Organic Chemistry in Asia has been always supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, IUPAC, Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, Center for Molecular Design and Synthesis, National Research Council of Thailand, Chulabhorn Research Institute, etc.

On the evening of October 22, Zhai Hongbin, the member of Organizing Committee and researcher of Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, presided over the closing meeting, Yao Zhujun, the secretary general of Organizing Committee declared on behalf of Organizing Committee that the Conference has obtained the predicted effect and has been completely successful, the scientific contents have been showed fully, scientists have carried out extensive communication and accumulated certain base for the development of organic chemistry and international cooperation among scientists, wish the friendship between scientists of Asian countries can be continues along with the development of science. The award ceremony of Asian CORE Program Lectureship Award was also held in the closing meeting.
