“Salt Lake Strategic Lithium Resources Protection and High-Value Development Seminar” Was Held in the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry

The “Salt Lake Strategic Lithium Resources Protection and High-value Development Seminar” was held in the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry on May 11, 2009. A number of experts from Tsinghua University, East China University of Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Shanghai Petrochemical Research General Institute of Sinopec Group, Qinghai Salt Lake Institute and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry attended the seminar.

The Director Jiang Biao of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry addressed the greetings, Academician Yuan Chengye of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and Academician Zhang Pengxi of Qinghai Salt Lake Institute respectively did the specific reports the “Salt Lake Strategic Lithium Resources Protection and High-value Development Seminar” and the "Salt Lake Resources’ Comprehensive Utilization and Protection", through which introduced the current development and utilization situations of our national salt lake resources and the problems remained. Academician Fei Weiyang of Tsinghua University and Academician Yuan Weikang of East China University of Science and Technology and other experts who attended the seminar concertedly considered that although the development and utilization of our countries’ salt lake lithium resources achieved initially current results, and initially realized the industrialization of the primary products of lithium carbonate and, etc., the problems of low earning rate and high cost still remain; more importantly, it has not yet been fully understood the importance of lithium resources as a strategic energy resource, the country's valuable strategic energy resource is taken as a low-cost primary product to be developed, produced and sold, this is not only a waste of resources, but also can affect the national strategic energy security. Therefore, it is much necessary to carry on again the examination and strategic assessment to the national salt lake lithium resource, to formulate the relevant protection and rational development policies, to research and develop the related key technologies of lithium isotope separation, etc.. It was suggested that to be led by Academician Yuan Chengye, to form the Academician advisory deliberating report as soon as possible and to report it to the related leaders to be counseled.

In order to develop effectively the national rich salt lake strategic resources like lithium and so on as soon as possible, realize the comprehensive utilization of the salt lake resources and vigorously develop the circular economy, and based on the fruitful historical co-operation of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and Qinghai Salt Lake Institute, and combining with the advanced system, mechanism advantages and industrial incubation platform of the Shanghai Institute of Advanced Technology (chips) of the CAS, aiming to base upon the salt lake lithium resource advantage and to give full play to the parties, through equal and friendly consultation, the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of the CAS, the Qinghai Salt Lake Institute of the CAS and the Shanghai Institute of Advanced Technology (chips) of the CAS reached a consensus on the tripartite-party strategic cooperation after the “Salt Lake Strategic Lithium Resources Protection and High-value Development Seminar” and signed the tripartite-party strategic cooperation agreement.
