In the afternoon of February 25, 2009, the 12th interdisciplinary seminar of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry was held in the reporting auditorium of the library of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry. This seminar was presided by Academician Lin Guoqiang, Director of Advisory Committee of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry. The specially chaired person was Academician Yan Deyue, Shanghai Jiaotong University, whose title was "To Explore the Mysteries of Nature - Self-assembly of Macromolecular". Some researchers and more than 100 of workers and students attended the seminar.

Firstly, Mr. Lin thanked Mr. Yan Deyue for his coming to our institute and doing of the seminar; then Mr. Lin briefed Mr. Yan’s experiences and academic achievements, and issued the interdisciplinary seminar certification of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry to Mr. Yan. In his early years, Mr. Yan mainly engaged in the research of non-steady-state kinetics of polymerization; in the late nineties of the last century, Mr. Yan established the systematical theory of hyperbranched polymerization kinetics; In recent years, Mr. Yan achieved great success on the research of the aspects of macromolecularself-assembly and molecular design and composition of hyperbranched polymerization, in particular the observation for the first time in the laboratory of the macro-scale molecular self-assembly phenomena (macro-molecular self-assembly) by using non-regular polymer, which advanced the molecular self-assembly study into a macro-size study and proposed a macro self-assembly mechanism, which made our national research of this area in the international leading position.

In the seminar, Mr. Yan began from the two major issues of the human being’s exploring of the origin of the universe and the origin of life, through which leaded to one of the key issues that need to be resolved about the origin of life - how numerators assemble themselves and form life. He first introduced the magical self-assembly phenomenon in the nature, and then introduced the putting forward of the "supramolecular chemistry" concept and the research development of molecular self-assembly at home and abroad. In year 2004, Mr. Yan's research group published on the Science the Paper about the macro-molecular self-assembly of hyperbranched polymerization. They synthesized in the laboratory the HBPO-star-PEO which takes hydrophobic hyperbranched polyether as nucleus and hydrophilic polyethylene oxide as bond, and obtained in acetone solution its self-assembly formed cm-length macroscopic multi-bond helical coil and thus advanced the molecular self-assembly study into a macroscopic scale study. Mr. Yan also gave a briefing to the public on mesoscopic self-assembly, cell simulation chemistry and the progress of synthetic life research, and talked his personal history and experience on the scientific effort.

After the end of the seminar, Academician Yan Deyue answered the issues in which the public interested.
